Penn State York honors student-athletes and coaches during awards program

YORK, Pa. — Penn State York honored its student-athletes and coaches at the annual Athletic Awards Program held on April 26 on the stage of the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center on campus. This was the first in-person ceremony held since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Awards were given for play in the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA).

Highlights of the evening included the awarding of the Chancellor’s Award for Academic Character to Carter Williams, Womelsdorf, Pennsylvania, baseball. This award is given to the student-athlete with a 3.5 grade-point average (GPA) or higher, who, in addition to an outstanding GPA, upholds the five core values of the Penn State York Athletic Department: accountability, courage, diligence, integrity and respect.

PSUAC Coach of the Year

Keith Hartman, head coach for the women’s volleyball team, Dover, Pennsylvania, was named "Coach of the Year" for 2021-22. Hartman, who took over as head coach in 2019, made history and led his team to being named the PSUAC East Division Champions, boasting a conference record of 11-1. The team also won their first playoff game and a several players earned first team recognitions, player of the year, and specialist of the year awards.

PSUAC Academic All-Conference Awards

Thirty-seven Penn State York student athletes earned the distinction of Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) Academic All-Conference. This honor is bestowed on those student athletes who have a semester grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher during the semester of competition, or a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and completion of at least 24 credits.

The John Fritz Sportsmanship Award is given by the PSUAC in honor of John Fritz, retired PSUAC commissioner, who was considered the epitome of a team player and who had a true love for the "Blue and White." Recipients are John P. Dyson, Hanover, Pennsylvania, baseball; Alexander Morici, Haskell, New Jersey, men’s basketball; Jordyn Foster, York, Pennsylvania, women’s basketball; Matthew Schmidt, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, golf; Cameron Caple, Glenville, Pennsylvania, soccer; and Makayla Dyson, Hanover, Pennsylvania; women’s volleyball.

The Coach Ron Trimmer Award

Tarajae Davis, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, men’s basketball, received the 2021-22 Trimmer Award in basketball. The Trimmer Award is named in honor of the late former Penn State York Basketball Coach, Ron Trimmer, and is given to the most improved player.

Dr. Bruce M. Broadbent Award

Cole Wilson, Pequea, Pennsylvania, soccer, received the Broadbent Award given in honor of Bruce Broadbent, former assistant professor of kinesiology at the campus and division head of health and human development at the Commonwealth College. Broadbent was the campus’ first athletic director and worked for more than 30 years to promote the campus’ athletic programs

Christopher C. Miller Sportsmanship Award.

Landin Brown, York, Pennsylvania, received the 2021-22 Christopher C. Miller Sportsmanship Award for soccer. This award is given to an athlete who displays a high level of sportsmanship not only on the soccer field but also in everyday life. The award was established in 2002 to honor the late Christopher C. Miller, the son of former Penn State York Soccer Coach George Miller, who passed away on July 9, 2001, at the age of 16. During his soccer career, Christopher Miller played between 350 and 400 soccer games and never received a yellow or red card for unsportsmanlike play. His love of the game of soccer and outstanding sportsmanship will always be remembered through this award.

Women’s Basketball Character Counts Award

This award was instituted in the 2019-20 by Head Coach Tory Harvey. Members of the team annually select the recipient. It is awarded to the player, who in the eyes of her peers, displays impeccable character, both on and off the court. The 2021-22 recipient is Jayla Brown, Hanover, Pennsylvania.

The Athletic Director’s Core Value Award

The Athletic Director’s Core Value Award recipient is chosen by the athletic director and awarded to the student-athlete who best displays and upholds the five core values of Penn State York Athletics: accountability, courage, diligence, integrity and respect. The 2021-22 recipients are Hannah Knight, Bristol, Tennessee, women’s volleyball, and Malik J. Morris, Windsor Mill, Maryland, men’s basketball.

USCAA National All-Academic Award

This honor is bestowed on those student-athletes who have a semester grade-point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher during the semester of competition or a GPA 3.5 or higher and completion of at least 24 credits. Recipients are Bryan Bullen, Red Lion, Pennsylvania; Maxwell Smith, Manchester, Maryland; Hannah Knight, Bristol, Tennessee; Cole Wentz, Dover, Pennsylvania; Sadie Schantz, York, Pennsylvania; and Carter Williams, Womelsdorf, Pennsylvania.

USCAA All-American
