Supply Chain Management Class

About the Program

The supply management certificate program prepares students to obtain their certification in supply management (Certified Professional in Supply Management® (CPSM®) from the Institute of Supply Management® (ISM®). Skills and techniques learned throughout the program can be used immediately to enhance the supply chain process and improve your company's bottom line.  Penn State York is pleased to be working with Penn State Berks for this program.

Designed for the purchasing practitioner (managerial/non-managerial), forecasting and planning, logistics, operations and warehouse/distribution, the three required courses will enhance the skills of technical competence and practical applications.

A Penn State certificate is awarded upon successful completion of the three required courses.  All courses are 12 hours each.

Career Potential

Real estate, manufacturing, health care, and utilities are some of the industries looking for applicants with supply chain management experience. Positions include business and supply chain analysts, logistics and planners.

Meet the Instructor

Timothy H. Leh, C.P.S.M., C.P.M., MBA is currently the director, Global Strategic Sourcing for the Hershey Company. He is a certified train-the-trainer (T3) for Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM).

Course Offerings

Supply Management Core (MGMT 9614A)

  • Sourcing – cover the acquisition of goods and services at the best quality and price needed by one’s organization. Develop sourcing plans and understand internal stakeholder requirements and expectations, external stakeholder capabilities and constraints and organizational goals.
  • Category Management – the process of overseeing and maximizing the financial and operational value of a group of related commodities, products, or services, and create a category management plan to meet the organization’s key objects.
  • Negotiation – is a core competency and the supply management professional must be proficient at to add value to the buying organization and prepare a negotiation plan that aligns with organizational objectives.
  • Legal and Contractual – as an outcome of successful negotiation, the supply management professional will need to manage the preparation of contracts/purchase orders.
  • Supplier Relationship Management – develop supplier qualification to ensure components, materials and suppliers meet specific requirements.
  • Cost and Price Management – understand cost savings terminology and understand cost management issues.
  • Financial Analysis – examine the relationship of the department’s budget to the strategic and operational plans of the organization, summarizes the primary steps in budgeting, reviews the purpose of a budget, and delineates different types of budgets.

Supply Management Integration (MGMT 9615)

  • Supply Chain Strategy – develop and/or implement a material or service standardization program.
  • S & OP - Demand Planning – incorporate the use of sales, inventory, and capacity forecasts in the planning of materials production to better meet strategic objectives and goals.
  • S & OP - Forecasting – analyze and report on market conditions, benchmarks, and industry trends to internal stakeholders.
  • S & OP - Product and Service Development - new product and service development is a key source of competitive advantage for organization, requiring the design of better, higher quality products and services, and bringing them quickly to market. The supply management professional will learn how supply management plays a key role in a new product handover to production, or the selection and coordination of suppliers for a new service offering.
  • Quality Management – develop and/or administer a supplier quality certification program.
  • Logistics and Materials Management – understand supply management’s role regarding transportation, traffic management, and shipping along with the complexities of supply chains.
  • Project Management – supply and project management are integrally related. The supply management professional will learn how to manage external partners’ capabilities and linking them to organizational goals, supply management contributes to the strategic direction of an organizational through total cost and capabilities management.

Leading and Transformation in Supply Management (MGMT 9616)

  • Leadership and Business Acumen - Strategy Development – understand supply management’s key role with respect to both top-line and bottom-line organizational competitiveness and improvement, and incorporate supply management’s objectives, policies and processes enabling the supply function to contribute maximally to goal achievement in these areas.
  • Leadership and Business Acumen - Stakeholder Engagement – evaluate supply management relationships with internal departments.
  • Leadership and Business Acumen - People Development and Coaching – evaluate the supply management organizational structure, and modify as necessary to achieve the optimal structure.
  • Systems Capability and Technology – incorporate the use of technology-driven processes to analyze data and make more informed business decisions.
  • Risk and Compliance – implement a risk management program (identify the risk, quantify the risk, assign responsibility for management of the risk, and mitigate the risk.
  • Corporate Social Responsibility and Ethics – develop and implement a code of business conduct for the supply management function (organizational and supply chain safety, environmental compliance and responsibility in the supply chain and its life cycle, ethical standards in the conduct of supply management.
