Penn State York honors student-athletes, coaches during awards ceremony

YORK Pa. — The achievements of student-athletes and coaches were recognized during the annual Athletic Awards Program held on Tuesday, April 25, on the stage of the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center on the Penn State York campus.

Awards were given for play in the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) and the United State Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA).

Highlights of the evening included the awarding of the Chancellor’s Award for Academic Character to volleyball student-athlete Hannah Knight, of Bluff City, Tennessee. This award is given to the student-athlete with a 3.5 grade-point average (GPA) or higher, who, in addition to an outstanding GPA, upholds the five core values of the Penn State York Athletic Department:

  • Integrity
  • Respect

PSUAC Coaches of the Year

As head coach for the women’s volleyball team, Keith Hartman, of Dover, Pennsylvania, was named Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year.

During the 2022-23 season, York claimed the top seed in the PSUAC East for the second consecutive year with a conference record of 12-0 and an overall record of 21-6.

Making history once again, the Penn State York women’s volleyball team claimed a second-place win in the PSUAC Championship on Nov. 1 at Rec Hall at the University Park campus.

The Penn State York women’s volleyball team again made history in Penn State York athletics by earning the runner-up slot in the USCAA National Championship in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on Nov. 12.

Associate Professor of Corporate Communication Joe Downing, from York, Pennsylvania, also won Coach of the Year for 2022-23, as Penn State York’s golf team saw great success. Logan Snyder, a Penn State York senior, is the first men's winner of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Golf Championship in the history of the PSUAC.

PSUAC Academic All-Conference Awards

Thirty-six Penn State York student athletes earned the distinction of PSUAC Academic All-Conference. This honor is bestowed on those student-athletes who have a semester grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher during the semester of competition, or a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and completion of at least 24 credits. The John Fritz Sportsmanship Award is given by the PSUAC in honor of John Fritz, retired PSUAC commissioner, who was considered the epitome of a team player and who had a true love for the Blue and White. Recipients are Sadie Schantz, York, Pennsylvania, volleyball; Owen Bricker, Dallastown, Pennsylvania, soccer; Jillian Foster, York, Pennsylvania, women’s basketball; Victor Dorm, Dover, Pennsylvania, men’s basketball; Ben Segal, York, Pennsylvania, golf; and John “JP” Dyson, Glenville, Pennsylvania, baseball.

The Coach Ron Trimmer Award

Jon Ware, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, received the 2022-23 Trimmer Award in basketball. The award is named in honor of the late former Penn State York Basketball Coach, Ron Trimmer, and is given to the most improved player.

Dr. Bruce M. Broadbent Award

Owen Bricker, Dallastown, Pennsylvania, soccer, received the Broadbent Award given in honor of Bruce Broadbent, former assistant professor of kinesiology at the campus and division head of health and human development at the Commonwealth College. Broadbent was the campus’ first athletic director and worked for more than 30 years to promote the campus’ athletic programs.

Christopher C. Miller Sportsmanship Award

Joey Warner, Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania, received the 2022-23 Christopher C. Miller Sportsmanship Award for soccer. This award is given to an athlete who displays a high level of sportsmanship not only on the soccer field but also in everyday life. The award was established in 2022 to honor the late Christopher C. Miller, the son of former Penn State York Soccer Coach George Miller, who passed away on July 9, 2001, at the age of 16. During his soccer career, Christopher played between 350 and 400 soccer games and never received a yellow or red card for unsportsmanlike play. His love of the game of soccer and outstanding sportsmanship will always be remembered through this award.

Women’s Basketball Character Counts Award

This award was instituted in the 2019-20 academic year by Head Coach Tory Harvey. Members of the team annually select the recipients. It is awarded to the players who, in the eyes of their peers, display impeccable character, both on and off the court. The 2022-23 recipient is Jayla Brown, Hanover, Pennsylvania; and Michaela Fink, Dover, Pennsylvania.

The Athletic Director’s Core Value Award

The Athletic Director’s Core Value Award recipient is chosen by the athletic director and awarded to the student-athlete who best displays and upholds the five CORE values of Penn State York Athletics: accountability, courage, diligence, integrity and respect. The 2023-24 recipients are Logan Snyder, Dover, Pennsylvania, golf; and Zoe Luedtke, East Berlin, Pennsylvania, volleyball.

USCAA National Championship All-Tournament Team

Jessica Dunbar, Hanover, Pennsylvania, volleyball; and Makayla Dyson, Glenville, Pennsylvania, volleyball

USCAA National All-Academic Award
